As part of the awareness campaign against substance abuse, students of DAV Public School, New Panvel, presented an impactful street play (Nukkad Natak) on the theme “Nasha Mukti Abhiyan” in collaboration with ARYA Yuva Samaj. The initiative aimed to create awareness about the serious physical, psychological and social consequences of substance abuse, including drug and alcohol addiction, as well as digital addiction. It also highlighted the importance of community support, timely guidance and rehabilitation.

The street play portrayed relatable, real-life situations showing how addiction can affect individuals, strain family relationships and hinder the well-being of society. Through powerful dialogues, rhythmic beats, expressive performances and energetic call-and-response slogans, the student actors depicted the journey from peer pressure and unhealthy habits towards awareness, hope, recovery and the choice of a healthy lifestyle.

Public Outreach and Engagement

To reach a wider cross-section of the community, the performances were presented at public locations across Panvel, including Bhavna Medical (Sector 3), CIDCO Garden (Sector 10), Orion Mall and Vadale Talav, Old Panvel. The performances engaged commuters, shoppers, families, young people and senior citizens, particularly during the evening hours.

The audience responded warmly to the students’ realistic character portrayals and the everyday situations presented in the play. Several members of the public shared positive feedback and showed interest in the information displayed on the banners regarding drug de-addiction and rehabilitation support. This helped reinforce the message that people facing addiction need awareness, understanding and access to appropriate help rather than stigma.

The street play initiative successfully carried the message of Nasha Mukti Abhiyan beyond the school campus and brought it directly to the community. Through their confidence, creativity and social commitment, the students demonstrated how performing arts can become a meaningful medium for public awareness and positive social change.
